Two defending champs, six first-time participants, one coach with 12 trips, another coach with a record five-straight berths, another coach with two teams in and the most accurate state rankings…that and more as we begin previewing the 36th annual girls basketball state tourney.

STATE TOURNAMENT NOTEBOOK – Tom Jenkins, OGBR

• There are 12 new teams out of the 16 teams in the State Final Fours from last year. (Returning from last year’s Final Fours are (D-I) Kettering Fairmont, (D-II) Hathaway Brown, (D-IV) Fort Loramie & Harvest Prep)
There are no returning teams in D-III from last year’s D-III Final Four.

• There are 2 reigning state champions returning to this year’s Final Fours  (D-II) Hathaway Brown and (D-IV) Harvest Prep are reigning state champs.

• 6 of the 16 teams in this year’s state Final Four(s) making their first ever appearance in the Final Four. (D-I) Twinsburg, (D-II) Cambridge, Clyde & Dayton Carroll and (D-IV) Delphos Jefferson are making their 1st appearance in their school’s girls basketball history.

• This is the 2nd consecutive year a team from the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area has not appeared in any of the state Final Fours. Last year was the 1st time in 17 years (since 1993) there has not been a team from the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area in any of the 4 division Final Fours.

• To date this year in Ohio there have been 63 NCAA D-I College signees. 11 of those 63 are competing in this year’s Final Fours. 

Historical Notes

1. Head Coach Dave Butcher (Pickerington North) is making his 12th trip to the State Final Four which is the most of any active coach in the state and 2nd all-time in Ohio girls basketball history. (Pat Diulus  made 13 appearances – 6 with Garfield Trinity & 7 with Regina)

2. Head Coach Paul Barlow (Hathaway Brown) becomes the 1st head coach to compete in 5 consecutive state Final Fours over the 36 year history of the Ohio High School State Tournament. (Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame made it to 6 consecutive Final Fours…3 under Coach Scott Rogers with the next 3 under Coach Dante Harlan)

3. Head Coach Julie Solis (Twinsburg) becomes one of 4 coaches in the state to take schools from 2 different school districts to the State Final Four (Solon in 2006 losing to Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame in the D-I championship game)
The other 3 are Coach Pam Davis (Barberton & Canton McKinley), Coach Nann Stechshulte (Cincinnati Oak Hills & Minster) and Coach Pat Diulus (Garfield Trinity & Regina).

USA Today Super 25
Canton McKinley is the only Ohio team ranked (#22) in the USA Today Super 25. Expect that to change in their next poll with     Twinsburg beating McKinley    in the regional. Next USA Today Super 25     poll comes out March 15.
