State Wrestling Preview: Division II

75th Annual State Wrestling Championships

The 74th annual Ohio High School State Wrestling Championships start
Thursday at the Schootenstein Center in Columbus. One of Ohio’s biggest
annd marquee events, the state wrestling tournament never dissapoints.
Here’s a look at Division II and who to watch, what to watch and when…

Stop me if you have heard this before….

Graham advanced 10 to the state tournament and went 9-1 in the district finals at Goshen.

While it would take a major miracle for the Falcons not to hoist the trophy for the 11th straight season, there should be plenty of competition for second.

Lewis Center Olentangy, Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit and Mantua Crestwood all advanced seven to the state tournament while Oak Harbor and Parma Padua Franciscan each moved six on. Akron SVSM qualified five and Dayton Oakwood got four through setting up an interesting race for the runner-up trophy.

At Goshen, Graham was the beast again, winning by 205 points over runner-up Hamilton Ross. The Falcons put 10 in the district finals and went 9-1 in the final round. Isaac Jordan appears to have recovered nicely after taking the rehab route to make sure his injury was fully healed as he cruised to the title.

Oakwood got one of the few non-Graham titles with projected state champ Josh Nelson winning at 125. Four different schools won the weight classes Graham did not.
Olentangy hung on for a 158.5 – 139.5 district title at Columbus East over Claymont.
Claymont had more district champs than Olentangy (3-2), but Olentangy had more qualifiers (7-4).

At Marion Harding, Oak Harbor hung on for a 17.5 point win over Parma Padua Franciscan (159.5 – 142) behind three champions and a runner-up. Franciscan finished with the same, but the Rockets got wins in the consolation finals while Franciscan settled for two fourth place finishes. Amazingly, the two teams did not meet in any of the championship finals.

Walsh Jesuit led the charge at Akron Firestone with seven qualifiers. Amazingly, it is the lone district which – as of Tuesday – does not have results posted.
