Saturday’s Regional Quarterfinals: Final scores and what we learned – Some Big Boys are Bounced

State Playoff Football Scores

The second night of the Ohio High School Football Playoffs is in the books
and so is the season for 48 more teams. Steubenville? Moeller? Massillon? Canton McKinley? Middletown? Yep, they are ALL GONE. It was another crazy night…Click here to see what we learned Saturday.

Five Tings We Learned Saturday: Regional Quarterfinals

1. GWOC = GWOW: The Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division made a statement Saturday by going 3-0 in Division I quarterfinals. In Region 4, Wayne beat top seed Middletown 21-0 and Centerville beat Moeller 27-17. In the Region 3 quarterfinals Springfield beat Hilliard Darby 22-7. The GWOC North Division is 1-1 in the playoffs. Troy dropped its Region 3 quarterfinal at Pickerington Central, while Trotwood-Madison beat Harrison in a D-II Region 8 quarterfinal Friday.

2. GCL South, Greater Miami Conference Struggle:
Two of Ohio’s “Power” conferences in D-I looked anything but powerful Saturday. The GCL South and GMC went a combined 2-4 in their quarterfinals. Colerain and St. Xavier won and they both beat fellow league mates Hamilton and LaSalle, respectively.

3. Steubenville finishes without a win over an Ohio team and ousted in the first round for the first time since 2001:
Big Red went 8-0 against out-of-state opponents in 2010 and went 0-3 against Ohio schools, losing to Massillon Washington, Youngstown Ursuline and Dover, which won 31-28 at Harding Stadium in a D-III Region 10 quarterfinal. The first round playoff loss was Steubenville’s first since 2001 when Columbus DeSales beat Big Red 38-8. Steubenville also lost two games at home (Ursuline the other) in the same season for the first time since 2001.

4. GCL Central shines:
Speaking of trifectas, the GCL Central went 3-0 on Saturday. Hamilton Badin took down No. 1 seed North Union 23-0 in a D-V Region 20 quarterfinal, while Roger Bacon and McNicholas each won D-III Region 12 quarterfinals. Roger Bacon beat Wyoming 26-21 and McNicholas beat Dayton Dunbar 28-0.

5. Life isn’t fair for Anna:
After making the playoffs in its first six years of varsity football as a member of the Cross County Conference, the Rockets went after and earned inclusion in the Midwest Athletic Conference five years ago. The intent was to better prepare themselves for postseason play. After a two-year absence from the postseason, Anna has earned three straight berths as members of the MAC and its reward hasn’t been just. For the second time in three years, Anna opened up postseason play at home against another MAC team – and lost. In 2008, Marion Local beat the Rockets and Saturday Coldwater did the same with a 27-17 victory. In both instances Anna had won the regular season meeting. Last year the Rockets won their first round game over Columbus Ready before bowing out to Coldwater in the second round in OT.
