The Central Ohio McDonald’s and JJHuddle Game of the Week for Week 7 is: Groveport-Madison at Pickerington Central

Here’s how the voting went:
Dublin Coffman at Hilliard Darby  42%
Groveport-Madison at Pickerington Central  49%
Amanda-Clearcreek at Hamilton Township     7%
Heath at Columbus Academy  2%

7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Tiger Stadium
Last Year: Pick Central won 20-0
Series: Since 2002, Pick Central is 8-0 against Groveport and has outscored the Cruisers on average 31-9. The closest game in the last eight years was the Tigers 15-9 double OT win in 2007. The other seven games were decided by double-digits.

When Groveport-Madison has the ball:
The Cruisers are averaging 29 points per game. Pick Central has given up 22 points all season. To say something has to give is an understatement.

Groveport possesses one of Central Ohio’s top rushing offenses and is averaging 196 yards per game on the ground. Junior RB Melvin Smith is Groveport’s main weapon and has rushed for 609 yards and nine TDs on 93 carries. Junior QB Shane Denny has added 281 yards and seven TDs on 68 carries. Denny has also been a viable threat through the air where he’s completed 53-of-106 passes for 640 yards and three TDs. His main targets are Myran Hill (16 catches, 341 yards, three TDs), Ryan Jones (12 catches, 120 yards) and Smith (11 catches, 74 yards). Those three – and Denny – will have to make some plays in the passing game if Groveport wants to compete.

Pick Central fell painfully shy of its fourth shutout last week when a safety nullified that in a 45-2 win over Gahanna-Lincoln. Still, the Tigers own one of Ohio’s best defenses. The backfield of Eilar Hardy (Notre Dame), Tamani Carter, Mike Jamar-Brown and Kris Strange is arguably the state’s best and they lend run support to a Front 7 that’s great in its own right. Junior DL Jacoby Boren was recently offered by Ohio State and LB Jay Smith is a beast. On the season the Tigers have forced 11 turnovers.

When Pickerington Central has the ball:
The QB tandem of Grant Hammond and Nick Jensen-Clagg continues to rotate and excel. The dup has combined for close to 600 yards passing, six TDs and just two interceptions. Their efficiency has helped a running game that’s been dominant behind the tandem of Tyler “Speedy” Hammond and Devone Pennick. Hammond has rushed for 414 yards and eight TDs, while Pennick’s chipped in 296 yards and four TDs. The Tigers are averaging 235 yards a game on the ground. Carter, Hardy and Tyler Hammond are receiving threats.

Groveport’s defense has allowed 20 points or more four times this year and two weeks ago surrendered 40 in a loss to Grove City. The unit – which is led by DL Anthony Pruitt and Vincent Waymon and DBs Isaiah Davis and Aaron Davis – will be severely tested.

Who Wins:
Pick Central 35-14
