Blowing up!

Those could be two words to describe Brunswick senior Pat Forsythe. The 6-foot-10, 210-pound senior, who just turned 17 in July, is garnering the attention of some of the country’s best college basketball programs.

Though, for much of Forsythe’s career he has gone relatively unnoticed for a kid with good size.

“He has never put up staggering numbers and has never played on a great AAU team, therefore, he has virtually gone unknown until now,” relayed Forsythe’s head coach at Brunswick, Joe Mackey.

So why has the attention for the Brunswick big man suddenly skyrocketed?

“He was first noticed in (Las) Vegas by (UT) Chattanooga, who later offered him his first full ride,”’ Mackey noted.  “I sent hundreds of emails to Ohio schools hoping to spark an interest and got nothing.

Finally, I called Wright State and begged them to come and watch our kid. The assistant loved him. The head coach came the next week and offered. Then Akron came in and offered. Since then every mid-major school that has seen him has offered right there on the spot.”

Those schools include Utah State, James Madison, Duquesne, and Toledo.

The stakes are getting even higher.

“We had Indiana, Georgetown, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia all in our gym recruiting him within the last week,” stated the Brunswick boss.  “Cincinnati and Virginia Tech’s head coach will be in Monday. I think both will offer.

Bob Huggins will be in Tuesday and Thad Matta may be in Wednesday. He is going to their (OSU) football game this weekend against Indiana.”

Forsythe averaged around seven points and eight rebounds a game as a junior, and blocked a school-record 56 shots. In addition, he is the school’s all-time leader in blocked shots.

Colleges from Division I to Division III are all looking for big men, so when one with major potential surfaces coaches will be all over that individual like a cheap suit.

“Colleges love his size and his feet,” Mackey declared. “He has tremendous footwork and work ethic.”

He has made an official visit to UT Chattanooga and is going to Wright State today.
“West Virginia wants him on an official visit next weekend and Virginia Tech the following weekend,” Mackey said.

With all the attention, it would be easy for Forsythe to become overwhelmed.

“Although it has happened so fast for him, Pat is taking the recruiting process well,” mentioned Mackey. “It has been a crazy week!”
