CENTRAL OHIO MCDONALD’S AND JJHUDDLE GAME OF THE WEEK
UPPER ARLINGTON (4-1) at HILLIARD DARBY (5-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Darby High School
Last Year: UA won 10-7
Series: Since 2004, UA has won four of six meetings including the last two. No team has scored 30 points or more in any of the games.
When Upper Arlington has the ball: Talk about balance, the Golden Bears have it. UA has rushed for 886 yards this season and thrown for 818. The result has been four wins, including three in a row after a Week 2 loss at Springfield. The Golden Bears are led by quarterback Jake Johns who has thrown for 740 yards and six TDs. His targets include receivers Damon Rothgeb, Frank Epitropoulos and Johnny Mikes, who each have two TD grabs. The main cog in UA’s ground game is Drew Karram (398 yards and seven TDs). Ryan McSheffrey (279 yards) logs carries as well.
Defensively Darby hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in a game and the last two weeks has allowed two TDs combined in wins over Worthington Kilbourne and Central Crossing. Key contributors for the Panthers are LBs Matt Cyrus (three fumble recoveries), Cameron Kohl (37 tackles) and Jevaughan White (27 tackles). DL Tae Bradley and Adam Hernandez each have three sacks.
When Hilliard Darby has the ball: The Panthers can pass when need be but they prefer to run the ball and they do it well. Darby backs have logged 1,329 yards this season. The trio of RBs Dante Talley (299 yards), James Holt (248) and Caleb Day (174) have done damage as has QB Matt Allen who has rushed for eight TDs (and 192 yards). Allen has also thrown for five TDs and has shown the ability to value the ball (hasn’t thrown an interception). Darby put up 75 points on Central Crossing last week and scored 49 and 34, respectively, in earlier wins over Garfield Heights and Newark.
When UA’s defense holds the opposition to under 20 points, the Golden Bears win. LBs Ben Grindle-deGraaf (43 tackles) and Eddie Miller (39 tackles) lead the charge, while Epitropoulos (two interceptions) heads the defensive backfield. DL Charlie Houk (33 tackles) is a difference maker.
Who Wins: Darby 28-20
