There are a couple really good Miami Valley games this weekend, but
perhaps the most intriguing meeting will occur in Darke County on
Friday. That’s the day Coldwater heads south to tangle with Versailles.
The Cavaliers come into the pivotal Midwest Athletic Conference game 2-2, while the host Tigers are 4-0.
Here’s the tale of the tape…
Third-year Versailles head coach Bob Olwin (formerly of Sherwood
Fairview) has his spread offense humming. The Tigers are undefeated
after four weeks for the first time since 2005 and are looking to beat
Coldwater for the first time since a 14-0 win in the 2004 Division IV
state semifinals at Welcome Stadium. Since then the Cavaliers have
outscored the Tigers 177-63 five games. Points though aren’t something
Versailles has had a problem scoring this year.
Led by QB Damian Winner and a standout crew of receivers (including
Jordan Monnin, Mitchell Campbell and Aaron McNeilen), the Tigers are
averaging 42 points per game. In its latest contest, a 43-7 win over
Parkway, Versailles had 409 yards of total offense, 384 of which came
through the air.
Coldwater is coming off a tough 7-6 win over archrival St. Henry and
has a remarkably tough early season schedule. The Cavs lost to Kenton in
Week 1 and to Anna in Week 3. Both those games were on the road – just
like this one.
First year head coach Chip Otten’s team is led by junior QB Austin Bruns and senior WR Reese Klenke.
Who has the edge in this one? History favors Coldwater. The home field advantage favors Versailles.
Should be a good one.
