After three days of voting, the Central Ohio McDonald’s and JJHuddle Game of the Week for Week 2 is…a tie! That’s right, we have a tie, so we’ll have Two Games of the Week this week.
Here’s how the voting went:
Jonathan Alder at Marysville 24%
Brookhaven at Hilliard Davidson 24%
Olentangy Orange at Olentangy Liberty 14%
Westerville Central at New Albany 12%
CENTRAL OHIO MCDONALD’S AND JJHUDDLE GAMES OF THE WEEK
JONATHAN ALDER (1-0) AT MARYSVILLE (1-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Marysville High School
When Jonathan Alder has the ball: For the second week in a row, the D-IV Pioneers will try to go on the road and beat a D-I club. Last week JA shutout Thomas Worthington 24-0 for its first win over a D-I opponent since 2006. The Pioneers led just 3-0 at halftime. Senior QB Graham Johnston, one of 13 starters back for the Pioneers, lead’s the JA offense and will hand off plenty to Austin Dehart (105 yards and a TD against TW). Sophomore kicker Alex Smith is also a threat after booting a 51-yard field goal against TW.
Marysville’s defense will counter with an attack that forced five turnovers last week. The Monarchs however did give up 277 total yards in the win.
When Marysville has the ball: The Monarchs went on the road last week and beat Marion Harding for the fourth straight time 31-13. Marysville makes it’s living on the ground and did so to the tune of 297 yards rushing against the Presidents. They also scored 17 points off turnovers.
JA offers a much tougher hurdle this week. The Pioneers have yet to be scored on following last week’s shutout of Thomas Worthington and are led by D-I prospect Brandon Purdum (a DL with offers from Ohio and Toledo). JA forced four turnovers last week, including an interception that was returned for a TD by Tyler Parker.
Who Wins: Jonathan Alder 21-14
BROOKHAVEN (0-1) AT HILLIARD DAVIDSON (1-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Hilliard Davidson High School
When Brookhaven has the ball: Last week the Bearcats didn’t impress in a 27-2 loss to Marion-Franklin. The offense will have to play better – and score some points this week. QB Tajuan Green will need to improve on last week’s performance in which he completed just 4-of-16 passes for 30 yards. Senior RB Donivan Lipsey was Brookhaven’s leading rusher last week with 53 yards on 19 carries. He’s capable of more, coming off a junior season in which he ran for 923 yards and 14 TDs.
Davidson will counter with a defense led by senior LB and Vanderbilt recruit Keith Heitzman. The Bearcats must also account for Kyle Annis (DL), Isa Tate (LB) and Kyle Payton (DL).
When Davidson has the ball: The reigning Division I state champion welcomed Grove City back last week with a 28-21 loss. The Wildcats ran on 67 of their 72 plays and gave nearly half of those touches to Alex Mickley who rushed for 196 yards and four TDs on 29 carries. Fullback Nick Seiffert added 74 yards on 17 carries. QB Jimmy Curtis runs Davidson’s triple-option attack.
Brookhaven is still trying to find the right mix on defense where it returned just one regular from last year (Frank Marsh).
Who Wins: Davidson 35-14.
Check back next week for Players of the Game and a recap of the action.
