JJHuddle’s Division III Power Poll: Top 4 intact; Two new names enter

Akron Buchtel’s come-from-behind 29-13 victory over Massillon Washington earns the Griffins a spot in the Division III Power Poll this week. There’s another new team too. As for the top spots, DeSales, Wyoming, Steubenville and Mooney remain at the head of the class.


1. Columbus DeSales (1-0)
The Stallions built a 28-0 lead on Gahanna before winning 28-14. Next up is a long trek to Maumee. Previous: 1

2. Wyoming (1-0)
The Cowboys pulled away from Edgewood in the second half to win 21-7 in the opener. Now a monster test awaits in Week 2 with D-II power and No 6 ranked Turpin coming to town. Previous: 2

3. Steubenville (1-0)
The Big Red got revenge on Inkster (Mich.) with a 36-0 rout last Thursday. McKeesport (Pa.) comes calling this week. Previous: 3

4. Youngstown Mooney (1-0)
The Cardinals beat a solid Central Ohio D-I program in Pickerington North 31-14 in their opener. Now they try to do the same against a Northeast D-I power in Boardman. Previous: 4

5. Akron Hoban (1-0)
The Knights had little trouble with Akron Garfield, winning 30-13. A trip to Walsh Jesuit this weekend will be more challenging. Previous: 6

6. Poland (1-0)
The Bulldogs bit Hubbard 16-7 in the opener. Now they draw Austintown-Fitch. Previous: 7

7. Watterson (1-0)
The Eagles silenced some doubters with a strong display of defense and standout special teams. The result was 20-7 win over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. A trip to Beechcroft is on the schedule this week. Previous: 8

8. Akron Buchtel (1-0)
The Griffins shocked the state when they rallied from a 13-6 halftime deficit to run away from Massillon Washington 29-13. Another steep test awaits this week with a trip to Pittsburgh Central Catholic. Previous: NR

9. Dover (1-0)
Points are never a problem for the Tornados. In a 63-14 win over Carrollton, senior WR Colton Zahner set school records for receptions (14) and
receiving yards (291), while junior QB Derek Swinderman threw four TDs to
Zahner and six total. RB Keith Johnson added three TDs and 176 yards on 17 carries. Dover tied
the school record for points in a quarter with 35 in the first. Thi sweek’s trip to D-II No. 10 Ashland should have the scoreboard humming. Previous: NR

10. Akron SVSM (0-1)
Irish suffered a tough 20-7 road loss at Watterson. Akron North is the opposition this week. Previous: 5

DROPPED OUT: No. 9 Columbus Eastmoor (lost 25-19 in OT to Northland); No. 10 Dayton Chaminade Julienne (lost 23-0 to Troy)
