JJHuddle’s Division V Power Poll: Ursuline – who else? – is No. 1

Youngstown Ursuline has basically dominated Division V for the last three years, bringing home two state titles and making three state finals. Last year the Irish scored a D-V finals record 55 points on Coldwater. The Irish are an easy No. 1 pick. Who is No. 2? And 3? And 4?


1. Youngstown Ursuline
The Irish have played in three straight state finals and won two straight state championships. Who else deserves to be No. 1?
Opener: 8/27 vs Cleveland East Technical

2. Hamilton Badin
The Rams? No. 2? Yes. They return 12 players who earned GCL Central honors last year, led by UC recruit Patrick Coyne (quarterback).
Opener: 8/27 at Cincinnati Woodward

3. Oak Hill
The Oaks won a state basketball title two years ago. Now they’ll try to add a football title. Six All-Ohioans return.
Opener: 8/27 vs Chesapeake

4. Lima Central Catholic
Speaking of basketball titles, the T-Birds won one in March. Can they add a football title in the same year? Several of the same athletes say “Yes.”
Opener: 8/28 at Delphos St. John’s

5. Anna
The Rockets lost a ton of talent. They also return a ton of talent. This program has been waiting for a breakout season and it might finally be here.
Opener: 8/27 @ Lehman Catholic

6. Cuyahoga Heights
The Redskins led Ursuline 28-14 at halftime of last year’s regional final before succumbing in the second half. There are some holes to fill, but there are also 11 starters back.
Opener: 8/28 vs Cincinnati Taft

7. Patrick Henry
Name alone lands the Patriots in the Top 10. Potential makes them No. 7 – for now.
Opener: 8/28 at St. Charles (Michigan)

8. Fredericktown
The Freddies made the regional final last year and return 14 starters, including three players that made first or second team All-Ohio.
Opener: 8/27 at Sparta Highland

9. Northwood
The Rangers return 17 starters and “everyone who touched the ball” last year.
Opener: 8/27 vs Lakota

10. North Union
The Wildcats enjoyed an undefeated regular season and earned the school’s first playoff berth last year. Now it’s time to add to the program’s history.
Opener: 8/27 at Fairbanks
