The surprise team of the MAC in 2009, the Cardinals shocked Marion Local in week seven with a 17-14 win. They missed the playoffs by 2.90 points, but had their best finish since 2004.

The goal in 2010, according to fourth-year head coach Rob Messick, is to make the playoffs. “We are optimistic this season. Get it going and keep it going from last season. The kids are confident and motivated. Last season led into a great off-season and a great summer. The kids have worked hard in the weight room.”

Gone from last season is stud RB Spencer Rohr (1,536 yards, 14 TDs) and QB Caleb Williams. However, Messick isn’t overly concerned because he has a triple-threat ground attack.

Gilbert is the power presence, Friedger is the speedster, and Westerbeck can skirt the edge or cut back from the shotgun. Staton anchors an experienced offensive line.

Defensively, the Cards are stacked. Messick expects “big things” from his three seniors-Verhoff, Homan, and four-year starter Cox. He added, “Our offense will be effective, but the key to winning games in the MAC and making the playoffs, will be our defense.”

*Schedule –
NB faces six teams that made the playoffs in 2009, including MAC opponents Marion Local, Anna, Coldwater, and Delphos St. John’s. No St. Henry this year, just schools with a combined record of 73-48 last season.

Messick talked about his three seasons in the MAC. “This is the place to be. The coaches are unbelievable. You have to outplay your opponent. You won’t outsmart them. No week off. There is so much parity.”

Most observers agree, “It’s harder to win the MAC than it is to win a state title.”
