* Outlook–
After struggling a bit over the first half of the decade, North Union posted three straight winning seasons from 2006 to 2008. The success grew even greater in 2009 as the Wildcats posted a 10-0 regular season mark that was good enough to earn the No. 1 seed in Region 20.

The Wildcats fell to a tough St. Henry team in the first round, but the goals this year will be to duplicate last season’s performance and go even further.

“We have extremely high expectations for the 2010 football season,” third-year head coach Jesse Miller said. “We return great experience and athleticism. We are focused on returning to the playoffs and competing for a state championship.”

Eleven starters return for North Union, including Shields, the Division V defensive player of the year who posted 115 tackles last season. Shields also had 682 rushing yards and eight TDs.

The Wildcats bring back plenty of other stars on offense as well.

Jamison (942 yards, 11 touchdowns) returns, as do Hastings (709 yards rushing, 172 yards receiving, 14 TD) and Laird (579 yards rushing, 278 yards receiving, 13 TD).

North Union is stocked with experience, good speed and strength, which will be needed to offset the team’s size.

“Our team must have seniors that step up as leaders both on and off the field,” Miller said. “We must find ways to overcome our lack in (physical) size with speed and athleticism.”

* Schedule – This year’s team will face similar challenges to last year, including Division IV playoff team Sparta Highland and traditional power Marion Pleasant. But the Wildcats seem set to find themselves in the playoff hunt once again. Said Miller: “The players on this team have great confidence and a tremendous will to win.”
