Bellefontaine is under new leadership after the departure of head
coach Jason Brown. Chris Schmidt, a Bellefontaine grad and assistant
coach for the past five years, will take the reins where he’ll have
command of a younger team that lost a lot of seniors.

Bellefontaine
Division III
Region 10
2009 Record: 8-3

* Players to watch – QB Garrett Pickering (5-11, 175, Sr.), FB Preston Artis (6’2, 225, Sr.), OL Seth Mitchell (6’3, 310, Sr.), OL Paul Shough (6’2, 260, Sr.)

* Outlook – Bellefontaine is under new leadership after the departure of head coach Jason Brown. Chris Schmidt, a Bellefontaine grad and assistant coach for the past five years, will take the reins where he’ll have command of a younger team that lost a lot of seniors.

“If we can have some young guys step up, we feel like we can make another run at the playoffs,” Schmidt said.

Expect a lot out of senior leaders Pickering, Artis, Shough and Mitchell. Mitchell has garnered a lot of interest from D-I schools, and Artis rushed for an average of more than 60 yards per game last season.

The Chieftains have been to the playoffs two out of the past three seasons, so they’ll be eager to prove that they can do it again. They lost just two games during the regular season last fall: one against Tippecanoe and a second against D-II Tecumseh.

“The depth in the Central Buckeye Conference was tremendous last year,” Schmidt said. “Out of the six teams on our side of the conference, four of them made it to the playoffs.  This year should be another slugfest for the CBC title.”

* Schedule –
Week 1 will pit two schools with brand new head coaches against one another: the Chieftains and Wapakoneta. With no game film to go on, it’ll be interesting to see what surprises they pull out in the matchup. CBC tilts against Tippecanoe (Week 7), Springfield Shawnee (Week 9) and Tecumseh (Week 10) are circled.
