Hoban’s defense could be its best ever…the offense?

Everything appears to hinge on Hoban’s offensive line.

“We think we’re going to have one of the strongest defenses we’ve
ever had here,” head coach Ralph Orsini said. “We return eight defensive
players from last year’s group. Potentially, we could be a very good
offensive team.”

Akron Hoban (8-4)
Division III
Region 9

2009 Record: 8-4

* Players to watch –  QB Danny Hinton (6-2, 175, Sr.), C Allen Hopson III (5-10, 235, Sr.), S/WR Nate Greczanik (6-2, 190, Sr.), DB/WR Evan Luse (6-0, 170, Sr.), OL Fred McClain (5-11, 265, Sr.), DB Ian Santoferraro (5-9, 155, Sr.), DE/TE LaTroy Lewis (6-4, 230, Jr.), DE/TE Greg McMullen (6-4 220, Jr.)

* Outlook – Everything appears to hinge on Hoban’s offensive line.

“We think we’re going to have one of the strongest defenses we’ve ever had here,” head coach Ralph Orsini said. “We return eight defensive players from last year’s group. … Potentially, we could be a very good offensive team. It all depends on how the line comes around.”

Hoban knocked Parma Padua Franciscan out of Round 1 in the playoffs last year before falling to Poland Seminary. In both games, Hoban kept a lot of potential points off the board limiting Padua to 11 and Poland to 10. It’s another example of the  Knights stifling defensive. Indeed, their D is so strong, Orsini believes the team could have a shot at beating the school’s single season sack record

“That could be something that happens with Lewis and McMullen at the ends,” the coach said.

Offensively, Hoban will expect a lot out of Hinton. The dual-threat QB started seeing playing time late in the year rushing for 59 yards and throwing for 83 in the regional semifinal loss to SVSM. With a talented and well-trained defense, the offense will remain the x-factor in all the games.

“I was not particularly happy with the way we were playing last year,” Orsini said. “We were too inconsistent. I really think the key for us this year, is to be more consistent with the offense … If we can do that, we’re going to have a chance to win every game we play.”

* Schedule – Three of Hoban’s first five games are against rivals: Garfield, Walsh Jesuit and SVSM. A fourth is against D-I power Boardman. If the Knights escape that gauntlet 5-0 or 4-1 watch out. This team could be rolling come November.
