The Full(er) Story: Paying respects to Rico; Standout RB well respected and will be missed

Hilliard Davidson running back Rico Butler passed away last week.

It wouldn’t surprise followers of a football blog to read about the loss
of a big game. No football player expects to lose a game but each week
during the season one team wins and one team loses. However, this week
the football recruiting class of 2011 has unexpectedly suffered a bigger
loss than any of us could imagine.

It wouldn’t surprise followers of a football blog to read about the loss of a big game. No football player expects to lose a game but each week during the season one team wins and one team loses. However, this week the football recruiting class of 2011 has unexpectedly suffered a bigger loss than any of us could imagine.

I was invited to write the Full(er) Story because my story is like many football recruits. We are attending combines and making our summer college camp schedules. Serious prospects often attend the same events. These events create a bond where we support and follow each other through football seasons and recruiting. Rico Butler was a stand out at these events. He was turning heads at combines with his speed and athleticism. He was planning his summer camp schedule, just like me. Rico had a story, just like me, but tragically his story was cut short.

My story with Rico Butler and Hilliard Davidson begins with the loss of a game…Ashland’s. The only game that we lost our freshman year was to Hilliard Davidson. The story continued for the next three years as we often ended up at the same junior days, camps and combines. I respected Rico for his talent and humility. There was a void at the Next Level Combine this weekend as Rico Butler was missed. It wasn’t the same without him. The class of 2011 isn’t the same without him either.

I send my prayers and condolences to the Hilliard Davidson football team, the high school community and especially to the Butler family. As the writer of this blog, I find myself without the words to express my sympathy for your loss. I’ll just end this story with R.I.P. #5.
