21. Sam Borchers, Yellow Springs, Track & Field, 2003-2007: During his career Borchers was one of the state’s best runners, which is evident by the legacy and records he left behind. During his senior season, Borchers set three D-III state records, which still stand today (1:51.54 for 800 meters, 4:10.83 for 1600 meters and 7:48.39 as a member of the 3,200 relay along with Alexis Onfroy, Andy Peters, and Evan Firestone). Borchers also won state titles in all three events. He ended his career as a three-time state champion in the 1,600 and a two-time champ in the 800.

In his junior year Borchers placed third in the 1,500 at the Junior National Track and Field Championships with a very impressive 3:46.32 – the second fastest high school time that year. That time converts to a 4:02.95 in the 1,600 and a 4:04.36 in the mile, which would have bettered the all-time Ohio record of former Olympian Bob Kennedy. At the 2007 Nike Outdoor Nationals, Borchers won the mile in a time of 4:03.33, the fastest time turned in by a high school athlete that year.

His senior year Borchers also won the D-III state cross country title.

Currently a sophomore at Penn State, Borchers holds Nittany Lion records in the mile and 1,000 meters.
