Today’s entry won state titles in track and football…

30. Blaine Maag, Columbus Grove Football & Track & Field, 2001-2005: Maag had success in a couple circles. First, he starred as a running back in football where he led the Bulldogs to the 2003 D-VI state title as a junior with 287 yards and three TDs on 40 carries in a 28-26 win over Maria Stein Marion Local. Maag ended that season with 2,703 yards (15th best season in state history) and 45 TDs (seventh best). After his senior season, Blaine’s output netted him several more stays on the state’s all-time list, including: career TDs (99; seventh), points for a career (602; eighth); and rushing TDs in a career (91; seventh). His 6,134 career rushing yards ranks 11th all-time.

In track, Maag also helped lead the Bulldogs win a state title in D-III in 2003. Discus was his specialty and he dominated it. Finishing third as a freshman behind his brother Blake, Maag won state titles as a sophomore and senior and was runner-up as a junior. In 2005, Maag regained the state title from New Middletown Springfield standout Nick Panezich by just two inches (178-10 to 178-08). Maag also finished third in the shot put as a senior after being sixth as a junior and sophomore.
