If Kelly leaves, who else follows?

Notre Dame or Cincinnati? Where does Kelly land?

Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly is in talks with Notre Dame
officials to discuss his potential future as the Irish’s head football
coach. Something else that we need to discuss is what does this do to
those high school recruits who have made verbal commitments to UC? Do
they stay or do they go should Kelly leave?

It’s an honest question and one that becomes relevant anytime a big-time college coach talks or interviews with another school. This is no different.

Kelly’s open availability and draw to other jobs has arguably already cost the Bearcats one big-time recruit in West Chester Lakota West’s Alex Smith. Smith, a 6-4, 225 pound tight end who is ranked the No.4 overall recruit in the state by Ohio High, was a soft verbal to UC but seemed to be holding out for an offer from Ohio State, which never came. Smith announced recently that he’s headed to North Carolina.

“It was real tough not to pick Cincinnati, and I still wish the best for them; I want them to do well,” Smith told the Sporting News. “It just didn’t end up being as right for me. Plus, you never know where (Cincinnati) coach (Brian) Kelly could end up too. He could be somewhere else soon. That actually had something to do with it for me.”

Now the question is what does that do for another of Ohio’s Top 5 recruits who is considering UC.

St. Xavier offensive lineman Matt James, ranked the No. 3 overall prospect in Ohio, has narrowed his choices to Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Cincinnati. While James has official visits scheduled to the other three schools (or has already taken trips) he doesn’t have one lined up for UC yet…hmmm.

And we didn’t even mention what this does to Notre Dame’s recruits, who thought they were coming in to play for Charlie Weiss (not that Kelly’s offense shouldn’t suit them fine – should he get and take the job).

That being said, below is UC’s current crop of verbal commitments. Lets see what this list looks like in two weeks should Kelly leave.
