Holding Chase Hammond, 3 catches for 156 yards, was the only way to stop him (Photo by Gary Housteau)

Just when it looked like Mooney might run away with the game after a couple of devastating third-quarter intereceptions thrown by Boardman quarterback Robby Boyd, Braylon Heard returned one of them 94 yards for a touchdown, the Spartans mounted a comeback but it wasn’t enough to defeat their backyard rival in the end.  Playing for the first time in six years, this somewhat bitter renewal was won by the Cardinals 23-17.

Tyler Walls had 33 yards on 11 carries including…

…including this touchdown run to put the Spartans up 7-0.

Mark Brandenstein runs in from 6 yards out for this score…

…to cut the lead to 7-6 after a missed PAT.

A.J. Fox kicked a 38-yard field goal to end the first half and give Mooney a 9-7 lead at the intermission.

Heard picked off a Boyd pass on this play and raced 94 yards for a Mooney TD to give the Cardinals a 16-7 lead.

Hammond is off again. This time for 71-yards before he gets knocked out of bounds at the four.

But Boyd threw another pick to John Stoops (number 3 celebrating in the air behind 59) in the end zone on this play. John Stoops had two interceptions in the game.  Joe Stoops, number 12, also had an INT.

Charlie Brown takes off for 53 yards on this play.

Karrington Griffin scores from 7 yards out to give Mooney a 23-7 lead.

This field goal by Trevor Ragan cut the deficit to 23-10 in the third period.

Boyd was 6 of 17 passing for 188 yards including a completion to Walls on this play.

And a couple plays later, Walls goes down for the game and the season with a badly dislocated ankle.

Walls was taken off the field to an ambulance and had successful surgery that night.

Was this a fumble by Heard? It was ruled down

After this terrific third-down stop by Tarantino in the Mooney backfield, the Cardinals punted the ball back to Boardman but Boyd threw two more interceptions, one more by Heard as the clock was running down, to end the game.
