* Outlook –
Despite the loss of two Division I-bound offensive linemen (Nate Cadogan to Penn State and John Prior to Florida State), Portsmouth expects a rapid turnaround from last year’s disappointing 1-9 season.  The Trojans return 15 starters led by quarterback Josh Myers and running back Angelo Jackson.

Eight of Portsmouth’s returning starters were sophomores a year ago, and the added experience is expected to put the red and white over the top in 2009.  Myers is a heralded duel threat quarterback who, despite only one win in ’08, lived up to expectations.

Jackson and Jonathan Royster provided a nice thunder and lightning combination with Jackson providing a powerful running style and Royster providing sprinters speed out of the backfield. Justin Smith will handle the fullback chores for the Trojans.

London Malone, a three-year starter in the defensive backfield, will lead the receiving corps along with Kyle Simpson (5-11, 175, Jr), Patrick Underwood (6-1, 160, Sr), Royster, and tight ends Adam Bray (6-3, 175, Jr) and Tre Underwood.

Up front, four starters return led by tackle Casey Sanders.  The guards are Brennan Howard and Clay Lewis with Justin Welch at center.

Defensively, Portsmouth’s 4-3 base defense returns Jason James at defensive end and Smith at noseguard.  Sanders and Howard should rotate on the interior line while Bray and Collin Staker (6-2, 175) will compete at the other end spot.

The linebacking corps returns Underwood, Jackson, and Jalen Kennedy (5-10, 195, Sr) while the secondary returns Malone, Myers, and Patrick Underwood.

The Trojans will be moving from Spartan Stadium to a brand new state of the art athletic field and will host Portsmouth West in week two to open the new stadium.
