HOLMES TOWNSHIP – Tim Ehresman might not know all the players he’ll coach in Sunday’s Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association North-South All-Star Game, but Wynford’s boss has insider information on at least one of the 10 standouts on his Division III-IV North roster.

Colonel Crawford’s Austin Smith will suit up for the North when the game tips at 3:45 p.m. Sunday at Capital University in Columbus and Ehresman is looking forward to working with Smith instead of game-planning against him.

“It will be neat to be on his side for once,” said Ehresman, whose Royals split a pair of North Central Conference games with Colonel Crawford during the regular season before falling to the Eagles in the Division III district title game in March. “I know Austin very well. I’ve seen enough of him the last few years.”

Like Ehresman, Smith is excited about teaming up with his conference rival, if only for the weekend.

“It’s definitely going to be different because the last four years I’ve played against him,” Smith said. “It will be nice to see a familiar face, though.”

The North is a veritable who’s who of small-school basketball. Ehresman’s roster includes Division III co-player of the year Kenny Kornowski of Smithville, as well as Division IV co-players of the year Tyler Tucci of Malvern and Will Felder of Lutheran East.

“I’ve seen some of these guys play on TV and seen some film on some of them,” Ehresman said. “It’s difficult to get prep time when the kids are spread out all over the state, but a group like this doesn’t need a lot of prep time.

“We’ll meet them on Friday and get a chance to practice a couple of times.”

So how will Smith, Colonel Crawford’s 6-foot-5 swingman, fit in on the big stage?

“With his length and size, he’ll be fine,” Ehresman said. “It might be a little adjustment for him because the game will have a faster tempo than what he was used to at Crawford.”

Playing in the News Journal All-Star Classic will serve Smith well Sunday. Smith scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds in the loss.

“I wasn’t ready for the tempo of the News Journal game, but I’ll know what to expect now,” he said. “They are using a shot clock for the state game, so you know it’s going to be up-and-down.”

The South team will be coached by Highland’s Mike Hoyng. Wynford lost to Hoyng’s Scots in the 1988 regional title game. Hoyng guided Highland to the state tournament again in 1992 and 1998, winning it all in ’98.

“This is one of the top games you can coach in,” Hoyng said. “It’s the final time these kids get to showcase their talents at this level.

“Our main job is to give them some organization that allows them to have fun and play.”

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association (OHSBCA) will hold its North-South all-star games for boys and girls on Sunday, April 19, at Capital University in Columbus.
