Central Ohio Huddle

It’s early, but already several spring sports teams have separated themselves from the pack, including Grove City and Dublin Scioto in baseball and Mount Gilead and Pickerington North in softball. There are others too…read on.

Fortunately for central Ohio area spring sports athletes, their season began last week. A sunny first week of April allowed area schools to get in four to five games on the diamond, revealing some strong teams such as Grove City and Dublin Scioto in baseball and Mount Gilead and Pickerington North in softball. The second week has began rough as a majority of schools were forced to cancel events for Monday and Tuesday as snow mixed in with rain and sleet, creating a more winter sports like weather pattern. This is life for spring athletes in central Ohio.

Jessica Pohlman, Millersport softball: Millersport is off to a 2-1 start on the season, part of which is due to the performance in the pitching circle of Jessica Pohlman. In a 4-1 win over Fisher Catholic in a Mid-State League Cardinal Division game, Pohlman struckout 11 batters, walked one and scattered four hits in a complete game effort.

Berne Union, baseball:
The Rockets ended the week by sweeping Fairfield County rival Bloom-Carroll 3-0 and 6-5 in a doubleheader.

In the 3-0 win, Chase Wright went 3-for-3 with a double and Brock Shull was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. In the second game, Wright blasted two home runs, including the game winner in the sixth inning. Shull added four more hits in the win.

Quick turnaround:
Traditional central Ohio baseball power Hebron Lakewood is off to a 6-1 start on the season after finishing last year with a sub-par 11-16 mark. The Lancers earned their last win over Mid-State League Ohio Division rival Newark Catholic, 6-1. Lakewood hurler Justin White checked the Green Wave to five hits, one walk, fanned five batters and allowed an unearned run.

No raiding allowed:
The London boys track team didn’t allow the opposition to plunder its relay meet, holding off Hamilton Township to win the title. The Red Raiders won the 4x4m relay and sprint medley, and did enough in the other events to earn the win.

Comeback kids:
The Amanda-Clearcreek baseball team posted two impressive comebacks during the first week.  Trailing Washington Court House 10-4, the Aces put up nine runs in their last at-bat to take the victory. Amanda-Clearcreek, which has started the season at 4-1, dug itself out of a 6-0 hole in a game against Chillicothe Southeastern to win 11-9.

Clutch shot:
Ally Trombetti hit a shot with 2:15 left in overtime, lifting Olentangy past Olentangy Liberty 10-9 in a larcrosse game. Olentangy Liberty, which has not beaten the Braves since the two schools split, drops to 0-7 in the rivalry.

Buckeyes in Carolina:
Buckeye Valley picked up three wins in four games during a recent baseball spring trip to South Carolina.

Matt Free got the Barons going with a solo tater in the third inning in a 10-8 win over North Oldham (Ky.) in the first game. Valley finished the trip with a 14-5 hammering of Murray (Ky.).

Combination no hitters:
Lakewood’s Alissa Birkhimer and Alyssa Patznick combined on a 12-1 no-hitter against Newark Catholic. Birkhimer is 4-0 on the year for the defending Division III state softball champions. Teays Valley’s Alex Taylor and Kate Mays combined on a 10-0 no-hitter of Miami Trace. Taylor fanned five batters in two innings and is 5-0 on the season. Mays punched out two more batters in the remaining two innings.
