Despite a spectacular performance by Marshall’s junior guard Juwan Staten, who poured in 28 points for the Cougars, SVSM overcame a 5-point halftime deficit to win the D-II state title.  The Irish, led by senior Daylen Harrison’s 21 points, had a 10-1 run at the end of the game to earn the 59-53 victory and take home the school’s 5th state championship.

LeBron James pulled Juwan Staten (28 points, 20 in first-half alone) aside right after the game ended to give him some encouraging words.

SVSM head coach Dru Joyce had some encouraging words for Staten as well.

LeBron James and Dru Joyce did this same thing in the 2003 season. It was LeBron’s third state championship in his four years with the Irish.
