If asked to pick the nation’s top prep wrestler out of a line up, it’s doubtful one would select David Taylor. If asked the same question after facing Taylor on the mat, it’s doubtful one would vote against him. Saturday Taylor, a senior at St. Paris Graham, added to his legacy by doing something no one else in history has ever done.

Saturday Taylor, a senior at St. Paris Graham, added to his legacy by doing something no one else in history has ever done. Taylor became the first four-time winner of the prestigious Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament, tabbed by many as the toughest and best high school wrestling tournament in the country.

Taylor who won his third straight Ohio state championship at 112 pounds in March, won his fourth Ironman title wrestling 135. Bumping up 25 pounds in 10 months matter little.

Taylor won his first match 13-9 over Oak Harbor sophomore Ian Miller. He then beat Massillon Perry freshman Mike Hillock (21-5), Troy Christian senior and defending Ohio D-III 130 state champion Zac Hancock (12-0) and Tabb (Va.) senior Andrew Williams (pin in 4:44) en route to a finals meeting with North Alleghany (Pa.) senior Joe Waltko. Taylor beat Waltko 16-3.

Taylor, who is headed to collegiate juggernaut Iowa State, helped defending champion Graham finish second to New Jersey’s Blair Academy. Blair, ranked No. 1 in the country, scored 282.5 points, while Graham, ranked No. 2, posted 234.

In all, five of the nation’s top 10 programs competed, including No. 6 Lakewood St. Edward, which finished fourth (143 points). Central Mountain (Pa.) was third with 145 points.
