Cambridge will be young, experinced against tough schedule

Cambridge Bobcats

Cambridge will be young this season but do return a lot of experince with 14 starters taking the field for the Bobcats against a brutal schedule.

We caught up with head coach Rich Goodrich for more on this year's team.

Cambridge (7-3)

FB/DE Taylor Leppla (6-3, 220, Sr.), DL Lance Morrison (5-11, 225, Sr.), RB Tyler Hardesty (5-11, 205, Jr.), DL Lance Morrison (5-11, 225, Sr.), RB Tyler Hardesty (5-11, 205, Jr.), WR/DB Zach Freeman (6-0, 165, Jr.), OL/DL Caleb Gunn (5-9, 205, Soph.), Ben Shepard (6-2, 205, Sr.), Billy Webb (5-11, 165, Jr.).

The Bobcats will be young in 2008 but return 14 starters including Leppla, Morrison, Hardesty, Freeman, and Gunn.

“We have a lot of guys returning but we are still going to be young. We’re going to be a junior oriented team this year,” head coach Rich Goodrich said. “We’re still going to be kind of young but we will have some experience.”

Hardesty rushed for 1,330 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. He will also replace four-year starter Kirk Wetherell at inside linebacker.

Shepard and Webb will be competing for the starting quarterback job with Webb having the early edge.

“Skill position-wise, we feel pretty confident in what we’ve got coming back,” said Goodrich. “We feel we have experience at key spots.”

Tight end is going to be a question mark entering the season.

“We use our tight end a lot but Shepard got a lot of playing time last,” Goodrich said.

Cambridge faces a tough schedule this season with Parma Height Holy Name, D-III state runner-up Licking Valley, Maple Heights and East Central Ohio League opponents Dover and New Philadelphia all on the docket.

“The potential to have a special season is there but our schedule is brutal this year so as good of a team we might have, it might not reflect in the record,” said Goodrich. “We raised our bar a little bit and we’re going to need to see where we’re at.

“We just have to keep focused on getting better each day and take it one game at a time and let the chips fall where they may.”
