Veteran assistant coach Shane Hartley has been named the new head coach at Finneytown, pending Board of Education approval May 19.

Hartley, 29, has been an assistant coach the past seven seasons for the Wildcats, including the defensive coordinator in 2007.

“I feel that being the head coach at Finneytown is an honor, and I'm as excited as I can be to have an opportunity to work with the student-athletes here,” Hartley said.

Hartley, a 1997 Finneytown graduate, succeeds Eric Taylor, who stepped down after one season to become the new head coach at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy May 2.

“Shane possesses all the qualities that are necessary in an effective head football coach; loyalty, effective teaching skills, tremendous work ethic and, most importantly, he possesses the ability to build successful connections with our student-athletes,” Finneytown athletic director Chuck Grosser said.

Hartley was a standout linebacker and running back at Centre College in Danville, Ky., after he graduated from Finneytown in the late 1990s.

The Wildcats were 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the Cincinnati Hills League in 2007. Finneytown won two consecutive league games over Madeira (41-14) and Reading (18-14) to end the season.

“It is my hope that I can help our players become responsible and admirable young men and that we will build upon the recent success of the program,” Hartley said. “Our players know that I will ask a lot from them and I will give them my absolute best as well.”
