Westerville South lineman Ricky Harris has a scholarship offer on the table from Illinois head coach Ron Zook. He also has an interest in Ohio State. Harris, who could play on either side of the line in college, talks about those two schools and more.
Westerville South lineman Ricky Harris is sorting through more than your ordinary junior football prospect has to sort through. Harris is trying to figure out which side of the line would be best to concentrate on, which schools he is most interested in and when he will visit a number of the schools on his list.
The 6-foot-3 and 305-pound Harris went into his junior season considered one of the top class of 2009 offensive linemen in the state of Ohio. Harris was a starter for the Wildcats at offensive tackle his sophomore season.
The first few games of his junior season Harris again played offensive tackle. However after some college coaches began asking South coach Rocky Pentello if Harris could play defense, Pentello gave Harris a try at defensive tackle in the fourth game. From that point on Harris played exclusively on the defensive side of the ball and now prefers defense.
It is not a given that Harris will play on defense at the next level, but having experience on both sides of the line should only make him more attractive to recruiters.
Harris is receiving mail from dozens of colleges.
“I've been to an Illinois junior day,” he said. “I met the coaches and we talked about how they run things. They talked about the great season they had. I didn't go to the Illinois-Purdue basketball game. Instead I took some individual time with the defensive line coach. It was real nice.”
Harris has a scholarship offer on the table from the Illini. However he is also interested in Ohio State.
“I have some contact with Ohio State here and there,” Harris said. “I'm interested in Illinois, Michigan State, and Ohio State is up there. I'll visit Ohio State, I'm just not sure when.”
In addition to the three Big Ten schools Harris mentioned, other schools showing interest include Boston College, Northwestern, Iowa, Oklahoma and LSU among many others.
