The Buckeyes have landed verbal commitment No. 6 for their 2009 recruiting class with the addition of Clayton Northmont defensive back C.J. Barnett. The Buckeyes offered Barnett a scholarship in December and he committed to the Ohio State coaching staff while visiting OSU yesterday and attending the Ohio State-Indiana basketball game.
“I committed right before the game,” Barnett said. “I told coach (Jim) Tressel.”
Barnett had scholarship offers from Ohio State, Stanford, Miami of Florida and Cincinnati before selecting the Bucks.
“It felt right when I went there,” he said. “I just had a good feeling about it. I felt like Ohio State is the right place for me.”
Barnett was impressed with the Ohio State facilities and the people he met.
“Coach (Paul) Haynes showed us around,” he said. “The facilities are nice. Everything was nice up there. Then after coach Haynes showed us around, coach Tressel and the A.D. talked. Then I talked to coach Tressel and told him I was committing. After that I went out and watched the basketball game.”
And just like that the Bucks had commitment No. 6 for their recruiting class of 2009.
In addition to Barnett, the Buckeyes have class of 2009 verbal commitments, from Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney defensive lineman John Simon, Licking Valley, Ohio, linebacker and running back Storm Klein, Coldwater, Ohio, fullback Adam Homan, Toledo (Ohio) St. John's offensive lineman Jack Mewhort and Louisville (Ky.) Trinity linebacker Jordan Whiting.
The 6-foot-0 and 170-pound Barnett made 59 tackles and intercepted three passes during his sophomore season. Barnett had over 60 tackles and intercepted three more passes during his junior season.
Barnett, who is also an outstanding student sporting a 4.0 GPA, is the No. 8 overall prospect in the state of Ohio, according to Ohio High magazine.
Barnett attended two Ohio State games in Ohio Stadium this past season. He saw the Bucks play Northwestern and Michigan State. He also attended the Ohio State at Michigan game in Ann Arbor and paid particular attention to former Northmont defensive back and now Buckeye starting safety Kurt Coleman.
