Last season Delphos St. John’s made its 10th trip to the girls basketball state tournament and finished runner-up in Division III. If the Blue Jays get back, they’ll do it in D-IV.
Dropping down a division, DSJ has the talent and tradition to make a run at another ticket to Columbus.
The Blue Jays lost 70-percent of their offense and some key cogs from last year’s 25-2 club including leading scorer Jeanne Bockey (12.4 ppg).
But, don’t fret in Delphos.
Senior Sarah Clark, who started as a junior, and will take on a major role this season and look to enhance her averages (9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds) from a season ago.
Other key returners include seniors Emily Schwieterman (G, 5-5), Stephanie Knippen (C, 5-10) and Rachael Miller (F, 5-8).
Junior Victoria Recker (G, 5-6) will also be counted upon to contribute.
Defense will again be a key as well. The Blue Jays held opponents to 32 points per game last season.
Head coach Dan Grothouse enters his 18th season with a career record of 255-158.
“Hopefully our defense will carry us early until we get more confidence and comfortable in our roles offensively,” Grothouse said. “Rebounding will be a big key for us. Our schedule is tough so there’s not much time to get it going.”
