A look at key football games in the Eastern District this weekend

Eastern District Football
Eastern District contributor Kurt Stubbs previews some of the top football games in the Eastern District this weekend, including Steubenville vs Indian Creek; Dover vs Canton South; East Liverpool @ Beaver Local and more…

Week 1 (record in parenthesis is from 2006)

Thursday, August 23

Indian Creek (5-5) @ Steubenville (15-0)

Steubenville and Indian Creek will hook up for the first time in history. However, Wintersville (one of the consolidated schools along with Mingo), last played Steubenville in 1987. That game ended with Steubenville coming away with 28-27 overtime victory. The ending, however, was very controversial. The two schools haven’t met since. If you are traveling to this game tonight don’t count on a 1987-type finish. Look for Steubenville, behind sophomore sensation quarterback Dwight Macon, to end this game before the bands are playing at half. I like Big Red in this one, 41-7.

Friday, August 24

East Liverpool (4-6) @ Beaver Local (6-4)

Last year Beaver Local missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2001 season. Coach Rich Wright has owned his alma mater East Liverpool in his time at Beaver. This season looks to be no different as the Beavers are expecting big things. Beaver Local returns 16 starters from last year, which include quarterback Ethan Russell, tailback Devon Ludwig, and tackles Derek Wolfe (University of Cincinnati) and Derek Johnston. The Beavers have turned to a spread offense to utilize all the athletes they will put on the field. Look for Ethan Russell, a former Beaver Local quarterback Jake Robinson look-a-like, to have a huge night. Beaver needs this game big time with a brutal schedule lurking.  I’m going with Beaver 35-14.

Buckeye Local (2-8) @ Martins Ferry (10-2)

Martins Ferry will be celebrating its 100th year of football while entertaining Buckeye Local. The theme, “the Purple Rider fight song,” as fans will find out. The Riders will score early and often with junior Jeremy Murray getting started on his path to breaking the single season Ohio Valley scoring record. Purple roles in a big way in this one, 48-13.

Dover (11-2) @ Canton South (8-4)

Things may not be as they appear in this one. Dover lost Perci Garner and Daniel Ifft, while Canton South lost both Torrence brothers in Devon and Devoe. Devon is at Ohio State, while Devoe will be playing at Massillon Washington before heading to Ohio State next year. However, both teams will be better than most think. Do-it-all senior Matt Rinehart will lead the Tornadoes at receiver, running back, defensive back, and kicker. Yes, he does it all. Dover has talent back, but I think this will be a tough game on the road with a new quarterback in junior Corey Lisowski. This game will be close, but I’ll take South 21-20.

New Philadelphia (8-2) @ Canton Central Catholic (5-6)

New Philadelphia returns 17 starters from a team that just missed the Division II playoffs last season. In 2007, they will be found in Division III, Region 11. The Quakers will be led by senior quarterback Jordan Miller (Akron), senior Bryant McKnight (Division I recruit), and junior Tyler Dummermuth. On the other hand, Canton Central Catholic also returns a good many players from a playoff trip a year ago. I believe the Quakers are going to have a huge season, and they go on the road in week one to win 28-20.
