Last year, Solon (7-4) snuck in the postseason with the No. 8 seed in Division I, Region 1, and lost at eventual state runner-up Mentor in the first round.
This season, with 10 returning starters, head coach Jim McQuaide thinks the Comets should aim high once again. And they also want to make sure they make their presence felt immediately among their new rivals. They are joining a new conference this year (Northeast Ohio) following the collapse of the Western Reserve Conference.
“A big key for us will be how fast our offensive and defensive lines are ready to play,” McQuaide said. “We have a good group of returning starters. Making the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year is certainly a goal of ours and we’d like to win our conference in the first year.”
A few of the returning starters who will lead the way for Solon include: FB/DE Rick Tonelli (6-1, 213, Sr.), QB Zack Brillhart (6-3, 184, Sr.), OL/LB Steve Greer (6-1, 214, Sr.), LB Jeff Skonezny (5-11, 178, Sr.), DL Justin Woo (5-11, 245, Jr.) and K/P Pat Jacob (5-11, 172, Sr.).
The schedule includes tough early-season match-ups at Massillon Washington and at home against Mentor. But overall, it appears manageable and it would be a surprise if Solon isn’t in the playoffs once again. Even in the loaded D-I, Region 1.
