And they are lofty
“Our first five games are against playoff-caliber programs and eight of our 10 games are against teams who have been to the playoffs recently,” Xenia coach Ed Mignery said. “(We) will have to win against these teams to gain our first playoff berth. That will be a major goal of our tam this year.”
Mignery, who is beginning his 25th season as a head high school football coach (mostly at Hamilton), has a solid pool of talent from which to draw.
Senior running back Aston Jackson returns after earning first team GWOC honors a year ago when he rushed for over 1,000 yards. Jackson has a scholarship offer from Miami (Oh) and is sure to get more.
At quarterback, senior Eric Salter II steps in after backing up standouts Josh Cousins (Air Force) and Zach Furlong (Iowa) that last two seasons.
Senior receiver Bruce Hawkins will be Salter’s main target.
“Our team will have an experienced backfield and wide receivers and an inexperienced offensive line,” Mignery said. “On defense, we will have experience at the linebacker and defensive back positions.”
Seniors Quatez Scott (DL), Jordon James (DB) and Andy Spitz (DB) headline the defense.
The Bucs open with Fairfield at home and then head to Middletown and Bellbrook before hosting Wayne. Centerville awaits in Week 5 before GWOC South action begins with Miamisburg.
“The team has had a great off season of preparation,” Mignery said. “I believe we will be a lot stronger team as a unit. Our success will be attributed to how fast our
inexperienced positions will improve.”
