2006 record: 11-1
Brunswick cruised through the 2006 regular season undefeated and won a playoff game. However, the Blue Devils were eliminated by Canton McKinley in the postseason for the fourth straight year.
Head coach Rich Nowak calls senior quarterback Sean Bedevelsky (5-11, 187) “the best quarterback in the state – and I know I’m biased.” The first-year starter threw for 1,759 yards (69.8 percent comp. pct.) with 22 touchdowns, four interceptions and 679 rushing yards last year. He was named second-team All-Ohio.
“He makes us go and plays biggest against the best teams,” Nowak said.
Another key player is fullback/linebacker Garrett Mack (6-1, 230, Sr.). He is a three-year starter and led the team in tackles the past two seasons. Last year, he was a first-team all-district selection.
Outside linebacker Joel Vendlinski (6-3, 195, Sr.) is another talented player. He led the team in sacks and was second in tackles last year.
Jordan Gribble (5-10, 160, Sr.) is a two-way starter at wide receiver and defensive back and he averaged 17 yards per catch last year. Also playing both ways is WR/DB Chris Scott (5-10, 160, Sr.). Gribble and Scott will be Bedevelsky’s go-to receivers. Scott didn’t start playing football until his sophomore year and he has tremendous speed.
Overall, it looks like another solid season is in the works for the Blue Devils.
“We’ve made the playoffs six years in a row,” Nowak said. “We won the Pioneer Conference five years in a row and this year we’re joining the Northeast Ohio Conference.”
