Canfield’s key returning players have Cardinals thinking playoffs

Canfield Cardinals
The Cardinals are a perennial playoff team and they lost to state finalist Pickerington Central in the first round last year in a 42-37 barnburner. This year they return a top 100 senior prospect in the state according to Ohio High in two-way lineman Jordan Graham (6-1, 250).

2006 Record: 8-3

Canfield is a perennial playoff team and the Cardinals return an impressive group this season. In 2006, Canfield made the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in D-II, Region 7 and it nearly knocked off No. 2 seed Pickerington Central in a 42-37 barnburner. Pick Central went on to advance to the state championship game and Canfield ended its season with an 8-3 record.

This year’s Cardinal team will be led by two of the state’s top juniors in do-everything athlete Dan Banna (5-11, 215) and RB/DB Dominic Smith (5-11, 185). Three standout seniors will also be heavily relied on and they include: WR/DB Pat Fening (5-11, 180), DB Mark Carrocce (5-11, 180, Sr.), OL/DL Jordan Graham (6-1, 250, Sr.). Graham is ranked as one of the state’s top 100 seniors by Ohio High.

One big advantage for the Cardinals this season will be their schedule. In somewhat of a rarity on the high school level, they will play six home games and just four road contests. Last year, both of their regular season losses were suffered on the road (27-17 to Canton South and 24-0 to Niles McKinley) and they have both of those teams at home this year. With the talent they have returning, it will be a surprise if Canfield isn’t able to get out of the first round of the playoffs this year.
