OT/DE Derek Wolf (6-5, 275, Sr.), QB Ethan Russell (6-1, 175, Sr.), OG/DT Derek Johnston (6-1, 260, Sr.), TB/LB Deven Ludwig (6-2, 205, Sr.)
2006 Record: 6-4
Senior quarterback Ethan Russell is the team’s top offensive weapon. The state qualifier in the 400-meter dash had over 950 yards and 17 TDs last fall. Not only will the team return 18 seniors and 16 starters (eight on both sides of the ball), Beaver Local will be going to more of a spread offense while moving away from the Wing-T and triple option, which should allow Russell to excite fans even more this fall. Wolf has interest from BG, Pitt, Akron and Toledo so he’ll play a vital role in what the Beavers are able accomplish.
“We have eight starters back on both sides of the ball,” Wright related. “We do have high expectations. A team that has 18 seniors and 16 starters back better be able to do something. We did lose tailback Luke Neville and offensive lineman Jeff Corriell. Every thing is in place, but our schedule will be difficult. Last year, we lost to Steubenville, Bellaire, Chardon and West Branch (all playoff teams) and we’ll face them again this year. That’s tough playing six of 10 teams on your schedule that have won state championships in their school history. We have to maintain our depth and stay injury free to get through our difficult schedule. However, I think we play a schedule that prepares us and we feel we’ll get back to the playoffs.
“We were young last year, but I think it will help us for this season. I’ve never had this many players back in one season. We will feature 22 letterman coming off of a 6-4 season. We will have a lot of changes on offense as we’re getting away from the Wing-T and triple option. We’re going to more of a spread offense. We have the talent and depth. We’re very optimistic. I think we definitely can get back to the playoffs.”
