Loss of Garner, Ifft leaves big voids for Dover to fill

Dover Tornadoes
The Tornadoes will have to replace perhaps the state’s top offensive duo in QB Perci Garner and WR Daniel Ifft, who is now at Ball State. Garner threw for over 8,500 yards, tossed 80 TDs with just 25 INTs and completed 63 percent of his passes. Last year, he had over 4,500 yards with 40 TDs and 15 picks. Ifft finished with 4,277 career receiving yards and 45 scores. He had 114 catches for over 1,800 yards and 20 TDs in 2006.

WR/K/DB Matt Rinehart (5-10, 170, Sr.), OL/DL Bill Longacher (6-2, 225, Sr.), OL/DL Mike Longacher (6-2, 225, Sr.), C/DL Gabe Philppi (6-2, 275, Sr.), SS Shane Lester (5-10, 180, Sr.), WR Kyle Sattler (5-10, 165, Jr.), LB Bob Gilmore (5-11, 180, Jr.), WR Carson Gesner (5-10, 165, Jr.)

2006 Record: (11-2, 6-1 East Central Ohio League; lost to state champion Steubenville in regional championship)

Senior “Mr. Do Everything” Matt Rinehart (5-10, 170) should be the Tornadoes’ top threat this season. He is getting D-I looks for his kicking leg and will attend camps at West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Michigan and Penn State. Despite a talented player like Rinehart returning, Ifft said replacing his top offensive duo from one year ago will be nearly impossible.

“It’s going to be difficult to replace Perci and Daniel, but at Dover, we try to take our offense and defense and blend our system to the talent we have,” said Dan Ifft, who is back for his 13th season. “We will look a little different because we don’t try to make the kids fit the system.

“We do have a couple of young men in Corey Lisowski, who is similar to his older brother Todd (who went to Cornell) and Marcus Mamarella that are battling for the QB job. Rinehart is also a possibility as we’ll work hard to get him the ball. We anticipate all three playing somewhere for us. You might see more running on offense with the package we have. We do have some good wideouts. We’ll try to get the quarterbacks to get them the ball.

“We do have to rebuild our offensive line. We have a number of kids that can step in. We’ve got a senior group heavy in terms of offensive and defensive lineman. We also feel our sophomore class should help us. We’ve got some talented young men in that class,” Ifft concluded.
