Cardinal Mooney LB/DE Taylor Hill and RB/LB Brandon Beachum announced their verbal commitments this afternoon at a press conference with family, friends, teammates and coaches on hand.

Hill, who is rated as the No. 22 prospect in Ohio’s class of 2008 by Ohio High magazine, selected Oklahoma over LSU and West Virginia . Beachum, rated No. 15, joins Mooney teammate Michael Zordich as a Penn State recruit choosing the Nitanny Lions over Nebraska, Florida State and Wisconsin .

Hill was recruited as an OLB for the Sooners.

“It has been a long and very difficult process but I enjoyed every minute of it,” Hill said. “I want to thank my parents for supporting me during these past couple of months. Thanks to (Mooney head coach) P.J. Fecko and all the other coaches for pushing me to do my best.

“After sorting through all the mail and doing research on all the schools, I chose the best three that fit me well – West Virginia, LSU and Oklahoma . After doing more research on these three schools, I came to the decision that best fits me.”

Beachum was recruited as a RB by the four schools he was considering ultimately deciding on Penn State .

“Each individual school brought something different to the table but all of them had all the things I was looking for,” he said.

“( Penn State head coach) Joe Paterno, who is a legend, has had a great career at Penn State . The academics at Penn State are second to none in the Big Ten. Also, they play great football and it is something I was looking for.”

Beachum plans on graduating high school early and enrolling at Penn State in January to participate in spring football.

With Hill and Beachum both committing today, they join teammates Danny McCarthy (Notre Dame) and Zordich as major Division I college football recruits in Mooney’s class of 2008.

“These two have worked very, very hard to get where they are today both academically and physically out on the practice field. They are well-deserving of the choices they have,” said Fecko.

“We are very proud of them here at Cardinal Mooney for everything they have done for themselves, their families and for the program. It is a very exciting day.

“This is obviously a very exciting time, not only for Cardinal Mooney but for the whole area. It is such a football rich area and we’ve been fortunate enough in the last couple of weeks to have a lot of major announcements here. We have guys that are going to play all over the country and they are representing the Mahoning Valley in a very strong way.”

Mooney will be in the hunt for its third Division IV state championship in four years when the Cardinals take the field this fall and are in good position to accomplish the feat with the talent returning.

“Now that I have this weight off my shoulders, I can focus on this year’s football season and try to win another state championship,” Hill said.
