Mogadore 2007 Season Preview

Mogadore Wildcats

Not many programs posses the resume the Mogadore Wildcats do with 20 playoff trips (eight straight), seven finals appearances and three state titles. This season the Cats could add one to every category.

2006 Record: 11-3

Some fans around the state are spoiled by their team’s success. Consider Mogadore faithful among that group. Not many programs posses the resume the Wildcats do with 20 playoff trips (eight straight), seven finals appearances and three state titles. This season the Cats could add one to every category.

Mogadore made the state semifinals last season and is primed for another deep run.

The return of standout senior running back Cody Destro heightens and legitimizes that probability.

A devastating runner with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, Destro tallied 1,764 yards and 24 TDs last year en route to second team All-Ohio honors. Destro, a third-year starter, has dropped 10 pounds and will also see action on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker. He started both ways as a sophomore before playing only offense last season. Destro’s being pursued by Division I-A and 1-AA schools.

“Teams will be gunning for him,” head coach Matt Adorni said. “Obviously he’ll have a target on his back every week and teams will have to stop him first.”

Unlike last year when Adorni said the Cats would “grind-it, grind-it, grind-it, play action,” Mogadore will have a more “explosive offense” this season. Expect the ball to be in the air.

“Once we start clicking we will be a little more multi-dimensional,” Adorni said. “Last year we were bigger and this year we have more speed. We’ve got some quicker guys.”

The Cats also have their QB back. Senior Shawn Pierce returns after throwing for 1,220 yards and 15 touchdowns. Seniors Ryan Brodie and Josh Bailes strengthen the backfield.

Senior tackle Zack Trainer anchors an offensive line that will be deep but inexperienced.

Only four starters return on offense, but Adorni said it’s a situation where “we really like the guys coming in.”

Defensively seven starters return including the entire secondary. Adorni calls senior linebacker Sean Holland the unit’s “leader.”

Overall Mogadore has 16 in this year’s senior class and 19 returning letterwinners.

“We feel very confident in this class,” Adorni said. “We have some very solid seniors.”

The Cats chances of getting back to the state finals, a place they haven’t been since winning the title in 2002, will depend on their ability to navigate a treacherous Region 21. Should it make the postseason, Mogadore can expect to join Norwalk St. Paul, Bascom Hopewell-Loudon, Columbiana and Warren JFK as region and state contenders.

Said Adorni: “If we’re lucky enough to play any of those teams for a regional title, we’ll take it.”
