2006 Record: 10-2

After spending the past four seasons as Fisher Catholic’s defensive coordinator, Mike McCann steps into the role of head coach. McCann, with previous stints at Canal Winchester and Millersport, replaces Mike Burkhardt who left to lead Carroll Bloom-Carroll.

McCann is well aware of what lies ahead.

“Our league (Mid-State League) is going to be as level as it has been in recent memory,” McCann said. “From top to bottom everyone is pretty good. There could be 5-6 teams that challenge for the title and talent-wise, we’re right there.”

The past four years Fisher has been in the playoffs and McCann expects a return trip. Albeit the cast has changed.

In addition to Burkhardt, also gone is All-Ohio standout back Pete Tobin. The Irish return five starters on offense (where they will continue to employ a Wing-T attack) and four on defense (play a 4-4).

McCann is not concerned with the many new faces.

“We had a crew two years ago that we lost and we thought they were going to be pretty hard to replace,” McCann said. “But we had kids step up and in. There are always kids wanting to step up.”

Senior Patrick Duffy will command a large role on offense and become the focal point for opposing defenses. McCann said he is “expecting big things” from the halfback and that the squad will “rely on him a lot” in the absence of Tobin. Vying for other backfield spots are seniors A.J. Yost and Falito Soler. Both also expect to log time at linebacker.

Other key returners are seniors Mike Wellner (WB/S), Eddie Budde (OL) and Chris Davis (WR/CB). Budde will move to left tackle after playing center last year and will also see action along the defensive front. Davis and Wellner will contribute on both sides of the ball. McCann said the plan with Davis is to “get the ball into his hands more.”

Junior Luke Roesch is becoming a solid college prospect who has the size to become a dominant force this year. A varsity starter in football and basketball as a sophomore, Roesch also has plenty of game experience – something the Irish’s roster overall is thin on.

“It sounds basic and trivial, but our lack of mistakes is going to be crucial,” McCann said. “We have a lack of game experience, so Monday through Thursday is where we’re going to win games. We have a solid core coming back though.”

The Irish open with Centerburg before facing their old coach and Bloom-Carroll on the road. In Week 3, Fisher plays at Newark Catholic.

“We’re really looking forward to this year because we feel we can do some exciting things,” McCann said. “We also know that we’re going to have to bring our ‘A’ game every week.”
