Delphos St. John’s 2007 Season Preview

Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays

If history is any indicator, Delphos St. John’s missing the playoffs last year should have the rest of Division VI shuddering prior to the start of this season. But the Blue Jays know that they will have their work cut out for them, in the early-going of the 2007 season against a tough MAC schedule. Contributor Robb Hemmelgarn has more.

RB/LB Tony Reindel (6-1, 225, Sr.), TE/LB Tyler Kroeger (6-2, 220, Sr.), CB Trent Kroeger (5-11, 170, Sr.), S Marcus Krendl (5-11, 155, Sr.)

2006 Record: 6-4

In 2004 the Delphos St. John’s football team stayed home during the post-season, which sat about as well with everyone in their camp as Gilligan did with the Skipper.  The following season, head coach Todd Schulte and his crew used the shortened season as motivation.

The Blue Jays simply responded by blasting through the campaign with a 13-2 overall record and a Division V state championship trophy – their fourth title in school history.  The Blue Jays followed up a season ago by finishing the campaign 6-4, but once again they failed to qualify for the playoffs and were forced to watch two other league foes bring home the gold in Divisions V and VI.

If history is any indicator, St. John’s missing the playoffs last year should have the rest of Division VI shuddering prior to the start of this season.

The Blue Jays know that they will have their work cut out for them however, in the early-going of the 2007 season.  Graduation took its toll on an offense which averaged over 31 points per game last year.  Valuable losses included first team All-MAC standouts Kurtis Staup (C) and Nick Johnson (QB).  Also departed from the offense are wide receiver Jeff Ostendorf, tackle Jeff Fritz and running back Aaron Etzkorn, who all grabbed second team honors in the All-MAC balloting.

Returning this season to step up and take leadership roles will be a pair of big seniors in Tony Reindel and Tyler Kroeger.  Reindel (6-1, 225) will secure a running back position in the backfield, while Kroeger (6-2, 220) will play tight end.

Defensively, Schulte’s squad yielded just over 16 points per game, but they were also hit hard by graduation.  Ryan Reynolds, Nathan Shobe, and Andrew Mancinotti earned All-MAC status last season as seniors, leaving more holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball.  This fall, Reindel returns to his outside linebacker position and will be joined at linebacker by Kroeger, who earned second team All-MAC honors in 2006.  Senior Trent Kroeger (5-11, 170) will handle duties at cornerback, while classmate Marcus Krendl (5-11, 155), will man a safety position.

Schulte, who enters his ninth year in charge of the Blue Jay football program, remains optimistic about the coming season.

“We are expecting a lot of leadership from the returning seniors on the roster,” he explained. “We have some good kids in all of our classes, but we are very young and inexperienced at this point. We have a lot to replace from last year and a lot of our expectations will rest in how fast our newcomers mature.

“It is never easy from week to week in the league we play in.  We have an extremely difficult schedule year in and year out, so once again we will have to endure a fast start and hopefully we mature in a hurry.”
